Sorry for the delay, was out for a week doing my billiards playoffs. All that is done for now, so on we go.....
I was talking earlier this week with my brother, he does a lot of coordination for the TED talks in Calgary, and we came up on an interesting topic. (As an aside, we usually do....our tastes are both fairly varied and SOMETHING interesting comes up).
The topic was email. I was talking about reaching out to him and which email address to reach, and it occurred to me that we as a society are really doing it wrong. The conclusion I had drawn in my head was that we need to have one unique email address that we can use, something that we can coordinate all of our systems to. Various companies want to make sure that you make an address with them, so that they can upsell you or track you or various things, but I don't see that as incompatible with creating something that is uniquely yours.
Here is my idea. Say that I want to create my own unique email address, personalized to me and only me. I am going to give it a named ending, I am sure this is in use but this is a thought experiment only. So my email identity (not address) is:
christopher.j.demers@earth.com
I use that because this address is only good on Earth. As soon as we get out to the rest of the galaxy, we will probably have a different system.
What can I do with this email identity? Well.....nothing. I just own it as defining who I am. However, now I can register additions to it in order to make it useful. For example, whichever internet provider I use, I will register them for my "Home" email address, and call it:
christopher.j.demers@home.earth.com
and for the one I use at work, I would have:
christopher.j.demers@work.earth.com
This way, if I change jobs, I don't have to change my email address, just who it is registered to. This could cause some issues with overlap, where I get emails that should come to me at my former company, but I think that is more easily manageable....normally the company would just discontinue my old email address and mail would vanish.
Now, once this is in place, if I wanted to have an account with Google, I could register the email:
christopher.j.demers@google.earth.com
and it would route me to the appropriate place.
I am sure this would need some refinement to deal with corporations and the like, but the possibility is there. It would make identity and email so much easier to deal with.
Who knows? Maybe there is a company in this, let me see where this thought takes me. Anyways hit me up with your thoughts.
Anyway, until next time.

We all identify ourselves so much with our emails. I think you're on to something.
